A passport is a travel document issued by country governments to its citizens that verifies the identity and nationality of the holder for the purpose of international travel. Passports are necessary for travel as you will be required to present your passport several times at the airport if you are flying and at the border if you are travelling by car. The passport can also be used as a source of identification outside travel however it is not advisable to carry around for daily use because it is more expensive to replace than an ID card. Children and babies too require passports for travel in and out of the country that should be applied by their parent or guardian.
Kenyan passports are valid for a period of 10 years from the date of issue and when the passport contains no further space for visas, you must get a new passport. Anyone above the age of 18years is required to present a valid Kenyan National ID card in order to apply for a passport replacement. Passport applications should be done at least 6 months before expiry or an intended date of travel.
On September 2017 the government of Kenya launched the new East African format ePassport. An ePassport is a biometric passport which includes a chip, which can be used at the automated ePassport gates instead of having your passport checked by a Border Force officer. The chip holds the same information that is printed on the passport’s data page: the holder’s name, date of birth, and other biographic information. ePassports are designed to increase security, making it more difficult to change data recorded on a passport and therefore limiting the chance of fraud.
The old passport has been phased out and is no longer a valid travel document. Everyone is required to apply for the new ePassport.
